Formerly the property of the patrician Saint-Estèphe family of the same name, Château de Côme was mentioned in Guide Féret, the Bordeaux bible, in 1886 as "Cru Bourgeois Supérieur". The vineyard was founded around 1840.
When Baron Velge bought it in 1997, there were still two hectares left, the label had disappeared, the vineyard having been leased by another chateau.
Very quickly, the vineyard area grew to seven hectares of high-quality, homogeneous terroir, an elegant label was produced, and sales were successfully launched. The first vintages already showed wines of great finesse.
Located on the best clay-limestone plots of the commune, Château de Côme can produce a silky wine of great subtlety, with melted and balanced tannins, focusing primarily on fruit and nobility, with a very good length on the palate, both the most Saint-Julien and the most feminine of Saint-Estèphe...
This is the case today, as work in the vineyard, as well as more precise winemaking, have made it possible to achieve this goal.
The blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, aromas and tannins, as well as for Côme's particular silky note, 45% Merlot for velvetiness and richness, and 10% Petit Verdot adding color and a nice spicy note, is ideal for Saint-Estèphe.
Great years see high-quality Merlots complementing perfectly ripe Cabernets. When the sun has been missed sometimes, the Cabernet rounds out on contact with the Merlot, which is always ripe. Of course, the vintage effect remains present, and the wines vary according to their specific characteristics.
A few years ago, management opted for organic vineyard management, with certification obtained for the 2018 vintage!
As the 1st vineyard in St-Estèphe to be recognized as such.
Since 2011, in line with the search for the most natural wine possible, Côme has produced a wine without added sulfur. This wine offers a roundness and richness of fruit not found at the same level in sulfited wines when they are young. Here too, the property is a pioneer in the St-Estèphe region.
